Alac International (NYC) Alac International was an international association organized to promote child care, legal and social integration at the local and national levels. In 2004 it was founded by the architect and former mayor of New Haven, Helen Robins, whose son, Leo, attended the University of Connecticut’s School of Architecture. Built in 1985, Alac was the first institution initiated to engage with urban planning in Canada. Its original architects, John H. L. Chiz, Fred Gue and Samuel H. Chiselt, helped arrange the development of Alac International and later the adjacent Canadian College of Education, this post with a partnership with the U.S. Department of Education and a New Haven Regional School Board. Both bodies subsequently developed into the Highway Development and Education National Association as an international organization.

In 2014 Alac was named an inaugural member of the Association of American Schools of Canada. Chosen for the inaugural Winter Hill Festival of New Haven earlier this year, the Alac International has been hosted by David O’Connor, Mayor of New Haven from 2002 to 2005, and former Premier of New Haven, New York Republican Governor Darlene Toner. History Alac is recognized as a landmark in Canadian education—generally in the rural Midwest and eastern Canada. The school began operations in 1985, when John E. Martin of the Alac International is commemorated as the “University of Connecticut School of Architecture” and his son, Leo, founded Alac International in May 1990. Previously, the university had continued to run Alac as a day school, but alac continued to function as a Catholic school until 1996. Alac was the site of the New Haven Day School for Year 8 students. In addition to the school’s campus, the school also employed faculty and served as the de facto residence center for students from St. John de Paul and St. Olave, formerly of Saint Olave University.

In March 2004, Alac was a host for a charity fundraising event to raise funds to set up a clinic at the hospital in Downtown New Haven. In 1973 it was announced during a press tour of Los Angeles that the Alac International would be one of the first New Haven’s to have an anti-fascist activist group, Alac 1 which is also known as Alac International 3. The organization’s mission, inspired by the German film Die Welt, uses this anti-fascist movement to stage events regarding integration at the local, regional and national levels because of the success it achieved in the summer of 1980.
