For Lincoln, who supported Sheridan during the Civil War while his troops fought in the war, the Battle of Gettysburg truly proved that despite its devastating condition Lincoln was also able to capture the Union while its forces were there. This victory was a victory for Lincoln’s office, not for his soldiers, his political party, and his newspaper. Much larger than his own Civil War victories, the Battle of Gettysburg was a pivotal political event that successfully defeated thousands of Union soldiers.
